It all started…
May 2006. My mother was found murdered in her home in Dayton, OH. The young man responsible for her death…my fifteen year old brother.
I AM…
From the sands and red clay dirt
From biriyani paste and jollof rice
I am poured out from where the river Niger meets Indian Ocean but always living in the comma
I am from the muck from which the lotus blooms, purpose birthed in conditions meant to destroy
I am from bald heads at age one and birthmark on my left breast - same as my mama and the one on the eyelid same as her grandson
From crippling love to the One that set me free
I am from Hail Mary - Pentecost - Methodist - You know Christian
I am from the shores of an old fisherman's town raised on dosa flour, chin chin, fried chicken, and tacos on Tuesdays
From my grandmother Agamuye I have never met who came back from death one last time to save my father
From my great-grandfather Charles - a French railroad man with a sister named Muriel
22 Karat gold chain still locked in evidence room
A small box of clothes labeled "mom's last set of dirty clothes - May 2006" locked in my drawer
Waiting the release of her son
Awaiting justice for all my brothers
That's where I am going
I AM My Brother’s Keeper
